Claire Broadbelt and Kathryn Garbett, co-chairs of the UK Civil Fraud & Business Disputes Practice in the London office of global law firm Greenberg Traurig, LLP, were joint recipients of the Mentor of the Year Award at the 2022 British Legal Awards hosted by Legal Week/Law.com International, 23 Nov.
The awards, held at a packed out Royal Lancaster London, shone a light on the best of the private practice and in-house legal communities. Claire and Kathryn were praised for the long, successful building and mentoring of their team.
Claire and Kathryn are committed champions of the 20-strong team they have helped grow over the past 15 years, mostly organically. They have invested in the continued development of those who began at the junior level and been personally involved in mentoring those team members, as well as new additions. An integral part of their success as mentors is their commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion and to fostering a working environment where everyone’s input is valued, and everyone’s identity is not only accepted but celebrated.
Claire represents clients on multijurisdictional civil fraud matters, both pursuing and defending complex claims. Her cases often involve serious allegations of fraud or misconduct, including the diversion of business opportunities, claims of deceit, breach of confidence, breaches of fiduciary duty, conspiracy, bribery, and secret profits. She regularly handles matters that include worldwide asset-tracing and recovery, freezing and search orders, and other associated injunctions. She advises clients across a wide range of sectors including banking and finance, commodities trading, information technology, retail, and real estate.
Kathryn focuses her commercial litigation practice on matters related to civil fraud. She has been involved in some of the most high-profile commercial fraud cases before the UK Supreme Court in recent times. Kathryn is known for her practical and sensible approach and tailors her advice and support to help clients navigate extremely complex legal and factual issues.
